I am so happy for both of you. How nice that his class missed him. I am sure that made him feel so good.
I suggest that you speak to the teachers and the principal and see if you can all come up with a plan for next years field day. Field day will always be part of his school life so why not prepare for it now.
This way he will have a role and be part of the activities as much as possible. I have a stong feeling that they did not realize how much this would have hurt him. Nor did they realize that this impacts on his social interaction with his class mates.
