Possible Nerve Graft Surgery Friday 2/27: Then what?

Post by fisticuffs »

Hi everyone!

My name is Rich. I was involved in a motorcycle accident in Cambodia late-november and am just now about to get surgery in Brussels!

I have avulsions of my C6, C7 and C8 nerves, according to MRI done a month after the injury. Very good hand control, weak wrist extension and I can curl my wrist fairly well.

So yeah, I have exploratory surgery on Friday and I'm pretty freaked about it. I understand it can take months or years for results to appear, but what can I expect the month directly after the operation? They might take my sural nerves out, when can I walk again? How long will I be in the hospital?

Its been an interesting time. I'm an American, but live alone in a country I don't speak the language (french), so it's been a massive challenge finding specialists in this injury, but I managed!

The PTSD and lonliness is the hardest. I can't handle being in the quiet.

Hi Rich,

I hope the surgery went well and you have a better idea of the damage and what is possible going forward.

The question of recovery really depends on the surgery and what was moved around.

I suggest get back doing "life" again as quickly as possible, if you were athletic, get back to the sports you love, if you love art, get back doing art. Don't wait till you are "recovered" to do life again, start doing the things that bring you Joy every day, start today!

I suggest connecting with a few of the brachial plexus groups on Facebook. UBPN has a page and there one more that is very active. Not trying to stop people from coming here to post, the fact that the research and past help stays here is very helpful, unlike FB when it is posted, it goes away.

My best to you,
Dan
