My son Matthew just had the Caps surgery on Tuesday Nov. 4 along with a partial Mod quad and the Acromioplasty. He wears a splint that holds his upper arm at his side and his lower arm out in front of him. This splint will be worn for 4 weeks all the time and 4 weeks at night. I will gladly share the results as well as pictures as soon as I am able to.

allison and I are getting ready to get the next list together....

I'd like to add a small list for Dr. Birch... would anyone in the UK like to approach him to see if he would be willing to answer some questions about it? And if not - can someone give me his email address and I will ask him ? Thanks,

I'm still waiting for the GUEST to come forward and give us the European specialist's name and the publications. I don't really understand why this information is not forthcoming.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Here are Professor Birch's contact details http://ubpn.org/medicalresources/birch-contact.html
Alternatively you could ask Karen Hillyer to contact him on your behalf, Rolfe Birch is her child's doctor I believe and he is aware of her connection to the UK Erbs Palsy group.
Could it be that 'guest' meant Rolfe Birch, as he is located in Europe?

i got the CALL you know the one where you think things are looking good, but... this is the first i have heard of the acromioplasty. although it makes sense to me why it should be done i also feel that marlin is doing so well. her rom is better than ever, her supination is continuing to improve, the only issue is her external rotation and contractures that are my primary concern, she has had caps twice, last in june and i really hate to put her through more surgeries but i am torn between that and doing what is ultimately best for her in the long run. i don't want to see another dislocation and the thought of ostotomy is horrifing to me. i wish i had more to go on before i make the decision i guess what we see on the 3d ct will help make the decision for me. does any one know what the risks of not having surgery if there is in fact a lot of over growth in the acromion? after four surgeries, frankly i get more scared every time we go back. i want to do the right thing but it breaks my heart.

Sharlon - we're in the same position but I'm hoping that the 3D ct scan will explain it all. I"ll let you know on the 17th.

Sorry I can't help here, Professor Birch is no longer Gavin's surgeon, Gavin is in the care of Professor Simon Kay, whom I have already asked about the overgrown acromion and corocoid bones and who reports that he seldom sees chidlren with these bones overgrown in his clinic.
Mr Birch's e mail details are on the UBPN resources page if Francine wishes to contact him with her questions - although I believe from one of our group members that Professor Birch may be off work sick at this time.

Hi, I had a rotator cuff tendinopathy and acromioplasty to both my shoulders. The right shoulder I developed edema (swelling). Later I developed pain in my wrist, which was diagnosed later as carpal tunnel syndrome. I just went through the surgery a few days ago with so far good results. My question is...could my acromioplasty/tendinopathy surgery cause this carpal tunnel in the wrist?
